860 DSP

Evolutionary Platform Lets Techs Change with the Times, Without Changing Meters

Fast and powerful, Trilithic's popular 860 DSP offers a versatile solution for your changing business needs. Thanks to DSP technology, you can typically update or upgrade it with a simple internet download. Anytime, anywhere.

So your techs can change with the times - or with new services - without changing meters. That can cange your bottom line. In fact, no other meter gives you lower lifetime costs. With the 860 DSP, you're ready for tomorrow, today.

For more information on the history of advances in the 860 DSP, see our Product Timeline.

The 860 DSP is a handheld spectrum analyzer providing all of hte testing power needed to insure HFC networks operate to high standards.  This includes balancing the distribution system, maintaining analog and digital signal quality, controlling return path ingress and much more.

860 DSP Options

The 860 DSP is the first high-performance distribution analyzer designed specifically for the demands of HSD and VoIP. More than just a signal level meter, the 860 DSP makes full use of DSP (digital signal processing) techniques to perform a wide array of transmission and signal quality tests, on both analog and digital signals. With options, the capabilities of the 860 DSP can be expanded to include high-resolution spectrum analysis, QAM and QPSK analysis and a wide range of return path installation and distribution tests, all without impacting size, weight or battery life.

The 860 DSP is fully compatible with Trilithic 9580 SST and 9581 SST Reverse Path Analyzers and can emulate the functions of the Guardian 9580 SSR Reverse Field Unit and Guardian RSVP² Installer's Reverse Tester.

DSP: For Today and Tomorrow

The unique architecture of the 860 DSP makes it easy to upgrade and expand over time to meet emerging measurement and data communication requirements. The 860 DSP achieves this adaptability by employing virtual instrument techniques, eliminating much of the analog circuitry of older instruments with cutting-edge digital signal processing (DSP) technologies. The flexibility of DSP means that applications that were not even available when the 860 DSP was originally purchased can be added later, usually by simply downloading firmware from the Internet.

DSP technology also gives the 860 DSP the measurement speed that modern conditions demand, refreshing all-channel displays and performing signal analyzes up to 12 times faster than any other analyzer.

Not only is the 860 DSP the most capable and flexible analyzer in its class: it is also the most cost-effective. The use of DSP reduces reliance on expensive and complex analog circuitry, giving the 860 DSP a starting price no greater than that of some installation meters.

Designed for Convenience, Designed for Durability

As with all Trilithic instruments, the keyboard functions are simple and direct. Buttons are large and widely spaced, making it easy to operate the 860 DSP with heavy gloves. Most measurement or data communication functions can be accessed with a single keystroke, and soft keys simplify navigation through set up and operation menus. Tests and other functions are selected from one of four convenient "desktops." Measurement results and received data are displayed on a high-resolution "4.6 X 3.5" back lit LCD display, and detected audio can be heard through the built-in, waterproof loudspeaker.

Though the 860 DSP has the capabilities of a lab instrument, it is built for rugged, everyday use. The housing is constructed of strong shock-resistant plastic and further protected by an integral rubber boot and padded bag that minimize impact damage and increase water resistance. The 860 DSP weighs only 4 lbs., and a hand strap makes it easy to hold the 860 DSP securely in all conditions with one hand. A shoulder strap allows for hands-free carriage.

Options

  • Return Transmitter Board (Requires SR-1, VP-1 or FDR Option)

When installed in and 860 DSP this option enables signal generation for the Return Sweep Recevier Option (SR-1), Return Tester RSVP Option (VP-1), and/or Frequency Domain Reflectometer Option (FDR).  REQUIRES POWER PACK OPTION. For aftermarket purchases of this option, you must also purchase the SR-1, VP-1, and/or FDR Option.

  • Return Sweep Receiver Option (SR-1)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this option performs functions of the Trilithic Guardian 9580 SSR Reverse Test Field Unit. Compatible with the Guardian and Guardian II System. REQUIRES RETURN TRANSMITTER BOARD OPTION. This option or the Return Tester RSVP Option (VP-1) is required to enable the Real-Time Transport Protocol Reflector Option (RTP-1).

  • Return Tester RSVP Option (VP-1)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this option performs functions of the RSVP². Test capabilities and displays allow RSVP² type testing of 8 frequencies at one time. Compatible with the Guardian and Guardian II System. REQUIRES RETURN TRANSMITTER BOARD OPTION. This option or the Return Sweep Receiver Option (SR-1) is required to enable the Real-Time Transport Protocol Reflector Option (RTP-1).

  • Spectrum Analyzer Option (SA-1)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this option harnesses the power of the 860 DSP to provide all of the typical and high performance spectrum analyzer capabilities without the complexity, cost and weight of analog alternatives.

  • QAM Option (QA-1)

With this option the 860 DSP analyzes QPSK and all common QAM formats from 4 QAM to 256 QAM, including deep interleave on 256 QAM, presenting constellation diagrams, MER, EVM and calculated BER, both pre and post FEC.

  • Forward Sweep Option (FS-1)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this option provides compatibility with the 8300 FST Forward SpeedSweep Transmitter.

  • Vestigial Side Band Modulation Option (VSB)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this option allows the operator to connect an off air antenna to the 860 DSP input port and read Level, MER, BER, and view Constellation and Equalizer Tap Information on 8 VSB and 16 VSB channels. REQUIRES FIRMWARE VERSION V7.4.1.1 or HIGHER. Aftermarket purchases require the Enhanced Digital Video Retrofit (IL-2). REQUIRES POWER PACK OPTION.

  • Vertical Interval Test Signals Option (VITS)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this option allows headend technicians to view Vertical Interval Test Signals (VITS), which are inserted during the vertical synchronization interval of analog video, and specify lines for testing. The option enables the technician to measure differential phase, differential gain, and chroma delay.

  • TraffiControl Option (TC-1)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this Option provides a way to troubleshoot upstream ingress and noise problems within active channel bands by seeing the ingress that is present “underneath” an upstream cable modem channel, or any bursty signal.

  • Real-Time Transport Protocol Reflector Option (RTP-1)

When installed in an 860 DSP, this option extends the measurement and troubleshooting range of field technicians by offering a simple round-trip VoIP quality test from any RF test point.  The option works through communication with the Tektronix DirectQuality active monitoring system, enabling tests to verify RTP communication from the test point to probes placed strategically throughout the cable network. The RTP Reflector Option enables round-trip stream analysis for packet loss, jitter, delay and other IP impairments.  R-factor, MOS and other industry-standard service quality metrics are included based on a Tektronix E-model implementation. This option works only with a fully implemented Tektronix DirectQuality System. REQUIRES FIRMWARE VERSION V8.1.11.1 or HIGHER.

  • Frequency Domain Reflectometer Option (FDR)

When installed in an 860 DSP, the Frequency Domain Reflectometer Option (FDR) provides a simple, convenient and accurate tool for determining the distance to cable faults. The option works by sending a sweep into the cable and analyzing the complex reflected wave to determine the distance to various sources of reflection (opens, shorts, splitters, etc.). The reflecting events are indicated on a distance versus amplitude display, and markers are used to identify the distance to the source of the reflection, and the return loss at that point. REQUIRES RETURN TRANSMITTER BOARD OPTION.
